Today Is Bloggers for Human Rights Day!

A wonderful blog site that helps bloggers from around the world stated it best:

Bloggers Unite for Human Rights

While the words might change from country to country and are sometimes taken for granted, human rights represent one of the universally agreed upon ideas — that all people are born with basic rights and freedoms that include life, liberty, and justice. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations.

Bloggers Unite For Human Rights challenges bloggers everywhere to help elevate human rights by drawing attention to the challenges and successes of human rights issues on May 15. What those topics may include — the wrongful imprisonment of journalists covering assemblies, governments that ignore the plight of citizens, and censorship of the Internet. What is important is that on one day, thousands of bloggers unite and share their unified support of human rights everywhere.

Today is May 15th and thousands of bloggers around the world are blogging about the importance of human rights. The fact that I am able to sit down and record my thoughts here for everyone to see is something I have taken for granted for quite some time. In some countries, the act of speaking your mind is not only censored, one could be jailed and even killed for doing so. That concept is just mind-boggling to me.

Without human rights, what do we have? We have fear, we have strife, we have turmoil. I imagine there are some people who believe the best way to "govern" is to greatly reduce the liberties of those being governed. Some people believe that force without reason is the only way to move forward in life. These people have very short memories and most often little to no knowledge of human history.

People want to be free. They want certain liberties that come with this freedom. They are willing to fight and die to achieve and protect these liberties.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations. This is a very special document that more and more people around the world are finding out about. It's a fairly short document, but definitely worth a few minutes of your time.

Today, step back for a few minutes and consider the subject of HUMAN RIGHTS. Conceive of a world where each and every one of us, of all colors and creeds, has all of the rights that truly and innately belong to us. Whatever you can do to help make that world a reality I'm sure is greatly appreciated by many people you will probably never meet.
